Pontiac, one of the United States’ storied automakers, was struggling with its lineup in the late 1990s. With its minivan offering, the Trans Sport, posting disappointing sales figures, the company, which was operated by General Motors, elected to create an “upgrade package” in an effort to spark sales. The “Montana” was created, and eventually succeeded the Trans Sport nameplate. Sales ticked upward when Pontiac phased out the Trans Sport in favor of the Montana, but American consumers had all but abandoned the “minivan” models, regardless of the automaker. With SUVs taking center-stage in the industry, GM felt that it was best to discontinue the Montana in the U.S. in 2010.
The Pontiac Montana remained relatively popular in Mexico and Canada, but GMs efforts to eliminate the Pontiac brand from its banner eventually led to the model’s demise.
Through two design generations the Montana saw vast improvements during its tenure. Because of poor crash test ratings on the first design generation, and of course, the unfortunate “minivan” appearance, Pontiac’s design team worked diligently to improve the model. In 2005, the Montana released its “new” design to the public, which made the model look more “utility vehicle”-esque, while upgrading the safety features.
When considering a vehicle’s safety features, the lighting systems are imperative, and unfortunately, often overlooked. By giving other drivers some notice regarding your intentions while on the road, you can prevent safety issues through perfectly functioning headlights, tail lights, and turn signals. This is why a damaged tail light can lead to a traffic citation!
