The Pontiac Montana emerged as a variation on the American automaker’s Trans Sport minivan in 1997. By adding new features to a reasonable popular design, Pontiac was able to transition the model without “discontinuing” it. In 1999, the Trans Sport nameplate was dropped, and the Montana took over the design. Though the design was popular in Canada and Mexico, Pontiac elected to discontinue the Montana in the United States, as American consumers were showing little interest in the minivan. And, though sales were reasonable elsewhere, General Motors began phasing out the Pontiac moniker in 2010, marking the end of the Pontiac Montana.
The Montana saw two design generations during its tenure. The initial design caught some serious heat from industry safety officials, as it reportedly did not perform well in crash tests. Further, consumers were skeptical of the aesthetic that Pontiac was going for with the model, as it looked too much like a “minivan”. Tastes had changed in recent years, with more consumers opting for SUVs to meet the same ends that minivans once provided. The second design generation, however, raised the front-end of the Montana, making the vehicle look much more like an SUV. Though this helped to some extent, Pontiac was already “on its way out” at this point.
