The Kia Spectra, which was originally released in 2000, was the South Korean automaker’s replacement for the popular Sephia compact sedan. The 4- or 5-door Spectra delivered an affordable model to consumers that were becoming incredibly concerned with rising fuel prices. Though the first generation designs were quite “bland”, as one publication put it, the economical nature of the models helped to propel Kia’s name internationally.
The Spectra saw two design generations before eventually giving way to the Forte in 2009. The later Spectra designs exhibited Kia’s new mentality toward vehicle aesthetics. Once vehicles that were simply offered for economic reasons, it became clear that Kia intended to ride the success of the 2000s into the next decade with a slew of new models and designs.
With only 9 years of production, the Kia Spectra played a key role in the establishment of the automaker on an international scale, and helped Kia to shed some of the consumer concerns about reliability. As the new Forte models roll off of assembly lines, it’ll be interesting to see whether or not Kia can maintain its momentum and continue to expand its consumer base.
