Step 2: Remove any screw covers that cover the flathead screws on the tailgate.
Step 3: Loosen and remove the flathead screws (8) that hold the backing plate to the tailgate.
Step 4: Lift and remove the backing plate.
Step 5: Pry and lift the panel that covers the tailgate handle's mounting area.
Step 6: Disengage the handle rods from the handle mechanism by disengaging the retaining clips (3).
Step 7: Loosen and remove the 10mm mounting bolts (3) that secure the handle to the tailgate.
NOTE: The 10mm bolt that holds the locking mechanism to the tailgate doesn't need to be fully removed right now. Instead, just loosen it while the mechanism is fixed to the vehicle.
Step 8: You can now remove the 10mm locking bolts.
Step 9: Attach the locking mechanism to the NEW tailgate handle by tightening the 10mm mounting bolt.
Step 10: Apply a small amount of glue to the bolt holes on the handle's interior. Attach the rubber washers to the handle.
Step 11: Move the tailgate handle into position and secure it by tightening the 10mm mounting bolts (2).
Step 12: Attach the locking rods (3) to the new handle by engaging the retaining clips (3).
Step 13: Place the cover plate over the area.
Step 14: Reattach the tailgate's backing plate by tightening the flathead mounting screws (8).
