2001-2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser Ignition Coil Replacement Instructions, Install, Change (2002)

Tools required:

8mm socket/ratchet with extension

10mm socket/ratchet with extension

13mm socket/ratchet with extension

Flathead screwdriver

2x4 or similar square of wood

Step 1: Open the vehicle's hood.

Step 2: Loosen and remove the 13mm mounting bolt (1) located just below where the air intake hose attaches to the engine.

Step 3: Loosen and remove the 13mm bolt (1) on the BACK of the intake manifold. This bolt secures the EGR tube to the engine.

Step 4: Loosen and remove the 8mm bolt (1) that secures the EGR tube to the back of the engine. You can now remove the mounting bracket.

Step 5: Loosen and remove the 8mm bolts (5) that span the FRONT of the intake manifold.

Step 6: You can now lift the air intake manifold. Support it above the engine using a 2x4 or block of wood.

Step 7: Disconnect the spark plug wires that attach to the ignition coil.

NOTE: Be sure that you remember which wires attach to which position on the coil! When we reattach them, they need to be in the RIGHT PLACE!

Step 8: Using the flathead screwdriver, release the RED locking clip. Depress the mounting tab.

Step 9: Loosen and remove the 10mm bolts (4) that secure the ignition coil to the engine. You can remove the ignition coil.

Step 10: Mount the NEW ignition coil by tightening the 10mm bolts (4). Be sure that the mounting tab and clip are secured!

Step 11: Attach the spark plug wires to the ignition coil. Remember, they have to be in the proper position!

Step 12: Reattach the air intake manifold by tightening the 8mm bolts (5).

Step 13: Secure the EGR tube to the back of the engine by tightening the 8mm (1) and 13mm (1) bolts.

Step 14: Tighten the 13mm bolt (1) just below where the air intake hose attaches to the engine.
