When General Motors unveiled the Chevrolet HHR at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2005, there was little doubt that the origin of the design was somehow connected to the Chrysler PT Cruiser. By delivering a “classic” feel with modern technology, the HHR was concoction of the same designer that delivered the classically styled PT Cruiser. These efforts, while fun for those of us that follow the automotive world, tend to generate a bit of buzz upon release, but do not have the staying power that new models tend to maintain. This dynamic rang true with the HHR, as it was only available for 5 years.
Though the HHR wasn’t available for long, the design team did a great job of creating variations on the model. By offering up the 2LT Special Edition and the SS Turbocharged rendition, Chevrolet was able to increase interest in the model among enthusiasts. Sales didn’t reflect this enthusiasm, however, and the HHR was discontinued in 2011.
Replaced by the Chevrolet Captiva Sport in North America, the HHR seemed to be more of an experiment than anything else. Its impact in terms of design helped to bring back some of the “age old” vehicle styling that helped to make so many other vehicles incredibly collectible.
